Warning signs

Sometimes, people with schizophrenia can recognize when they are becoming ill again or relapsing (known as a relapse signature), but they are not always able to do something about it.9

Often, people with schizophrenia lack insight into their condition and therefore find it difficult to recognize when they are becoming unwell. Friends and relatives can help to spot the warning signs of relapse at an early stage. These signs might include sleeping and eating less, not getting out of bed or being unable to concentrate as well as usual, unusual and uncharacteristic behaviour, bizarre ideas, poor personal hygiene and reduced interest in and motivation for day-to-day activities.1 If these symptoms are identified and dealt with as soon as possible when they appear, it is likely that the person will be able to get better more quickly.1
