The healthcare team will explain all the important aspects of treatment and decisions should be made jointly with the patient and their family. By working with the healthcare team in this way, the person with schizophrenia will be a partner in their own care, and will have the information needed to make decisions about their treatment.1,9

Once a diagnosis has been made, the healthcare team will try to make sure that the following takes place:1,2
  • Identification of goals for treatment and for life in the future, and discussion on how it may be possible to achieve these
  • Agreement on the kind of treatment needed to help relieve the symptoms and the best type of treatment to prevent a relapse
  • Assurance that the illness and treatment are monitored regularly and that appropriate support and information are available
